Born in Negun in Burdwan, Nikhilananda Sar combined teaching with rural public life. His parliamentary biography lists an honours degree, teacher training and an English-language-teaching diploma, with study at Burdwan Raj College, Calcutta University and North Bengal University.[2] A Bengali obituary recalls his teaching at Amarun and Jabagram high schools and peasant organising from 1958.[1]
His work extended to state development bodies. The parliamentary biography records a directorship of the West Bengal Agro Industries Corporation in 1980–85 and chairmanship of the West Bengal Handloom and Powerloom Development Corporation in 1987–95.[2]
He represented Mangalkot in the Assembly and chaired Burdwan Zila Parishad before entering Parliament. Elected from Burdwan in 1998, 1999 and 2004, he served in three successive Lok Sabhas.[1] His earlier committee work covered estimates and urban and rural development.[2]
On 15 March 2005, he chaired a sitting of Parliament’s Joint Committee on Offices of Profit in the permanent chairman’s absence. Its minutes record consideration of parliamentary nominations to a committee on minority education.[3]
