Life and work

1930–2014 · Peasant organiser and legislator

Benoy Krishna Konar was Hare Krishna Konar’s younger brother. His political work began in Burdwan’s movements during the 1950s, and he spent time underground to avoid arrest.[1] He emerged from the peasant movement around Memari and represented the constituency after the Assembly elections of 1969, 1971 and 1977.[2][3]

He became a leader of the state Kisan Sabha and president of the All India Kisan Sabha. An Anandabazar Patrika obituary records both his long organisational career and the controversy surrounding his comments during the Singur and Nandigram agitations.[3]

His wife, Maharani Konar, also represented Memari in the Assembly. After his death, their son Sukanta told the newspaper that Konar’s eyes had been donated and arrangements were being made to take his body to Burdwan Medical College.[1]

His Bengali essays and recollections are collected in Nirbachita Rajnoitik Prabandha, Smriti O Smaran, published by National Book Agency. The publisher’s record identifies the volume; its contents have not been independently reviewed here.[4]

This profile follows the notable-person list in Wikipedia’s Aguri article. The biographical sources cited here document the person’s life and work.[5]
